Network Device Discovery

Apart from computers, there are many other devices that make up an organisation’s IT infrastructure. For IT asset management to be truly effective, an organisation should be able to manage assets other than PCs. Assetworks Network Device Discovery uses combinations of ping sweeps and SNMP to discover any devices attached to the network. Devices discovered that are capable of layer 2 or layer 3 switching or routing are then interrogated to build a picture of the network’s topology. This information is used to build intelligence about non-PC devices connected to the network. Any device with a TCP/IP address will be detected, and Assetworks Discovery is supplied with a database of known generic device types, such as switches, routers, hubs, printers, scanners, wireless access points, fax machines, IP Phones and terminal servers. In most instances, Assetworks Discovery can also obtain the make, model, serial number, location and description of these devices.
