Hornbill Announces the release of Assetworks Discovery Version 4.0

October 1st, 2004 -- Hornbill Systems, a leading provider of IT support and service management solutions today announced the latest release of its new Assetworks Discovery product.

Following an extensive development cycle and beta test program Assetworks Discovery 4.0 (formerly PC Audit) has been released. The product is a significant upgrade on PC Audit and has been re-branded to better reflect its position within the family of products offered by Hornbill. Just like all other Hornbill products, existing maintained customers of PC Audit 3.0 will get the upgrade free of charge. This release of Assetworks provides a host of new features, as well as enhancements to the functionality that was available with PC Audit. The following is a list of the key features of Assetworks Discovery 4.0

  • Computer Discovery - locates any PC connected to a Windows based network, including mobile systems that are not always connected.

  • Computer Inventory - captures comprehensive software, hardware, OS and network and application information, which is held in a central database for subsequent browsing and management reporting.

  • Network Device Discovery - locates computers, switches, routers, radio base stations, printers, scanners, fax machines, terminal servers and any other network attached devices using a combination of ICMP and SNMP techniques.

  • Network Service Discovery - locates and tracks network services such as web, mail and FTP servers.

  • Software License Consolidation - with standard reports that creates visibility and control of software assets. Information collected by Assetworks can be used by software licence compliance tools such as Software Organiser used by organisations like FAST and BSA.

  • Recognise Unknown Software - executables and components through validation with the National Software Reference Library (NSRL), produced and maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) database.

  • Media File Discovery - looks for unauthorised, inappropriate or copyrighted media files on every computer and server on the network.

  • Packaged Reports - simplifies common reporting tasks, providing useful management information on asset data, identifying assets, locations, and software licence compliance. Summary information is displayed graphically in many areas of the Assetworks console
and a wizard-driven custom report writer is provided guiding the user through the creation of any report.

  • Remotely Deployed - with several choices of; fully automated agent, scheduled job, login script, or even deployment via e-mail, removing the need to visit each computer to start auditing.

  • Modern User Interface - with a familiar and intuitive 'look and feel' that is easy to use.

  • Reduced Cost of Purchase - and on-going maintenance, as Assetworks Discovery is shipped with Hornbill's core services, providing a fully licensed SQL Server, Web Server and Web Scripting platform as standard.

In addition to the many new features, a comprehensive training course is available and covers the configuration and use of Assetworks, and comprehensive product documentation is provided with the product for reference.

Supportworks, our service management application, has been Hornbill's catalyst in developing exceptional user interfaces that our customers really like. Assetworks now benefits from the same knowledge and experience of user interface design and we have created a very exiting new product. The release of Assetworks Discovery 4.0 spent a long time in development and testing, but the product features we have managed to deliver in this release have made it well worth the wait. Hornbill's involvement with the FAST Asset Management Group (AMG), who's purpose is to promote and educate the corporate community on the benefits of effective asset management, has provided us with increased awareness of the issues that most IT managers face. I believe that we have reflected this in Assetworks Discovery and even more exciting is the roadmap for subsequent releases of Assetworks that are planned, said Patrick Bolger, Hornbill's Sales and Marketing Director.
